Rogers Cup Semifinalist Denis Shapovalov Withdraws from Odlum Brown VanOpen
News Aug 13, 2017
Rogers Cup semifinalist Denis Shapovalov has withdrawn from the 2017 Odlum Brown VanOpen due to fatigue.
After a run in Montreal that saw the 18-year-old upset World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, World No. 31 Juan Martín del Potro and World No. 42 Adrian Mannarino, Shapovalov will see his world ranking raise from No. 143 to a projected No. 67.
“It is unfortunate that Denis is unable to compete at this year’s tournament. He is a great young player, and his accomplishments over the last week speak for themselves. We will miss him, but fully support and understand his decision, and wish him success going forward,” said Tournament Director Rik de Voest.
Shapovalov’s place in the Odlum Brown VanOpen men’s singles main draw will be taken by a qualifier/lucky loser.
